What an organization consultant found at one of the largest Internet companies?

Frequent visitors of this site knows that I used to work for one of the largest Internet companies. As that company was transitioning from a small company to a large, Fortune-500 company, it had a lot of internal issues. Employees were frustrated. Growing pains.

The company hired an organization development firm to develop a training course to train managers. To develop the training course, the organization consultant surveyed and interviewed managers and employees at the company.

What’s the #1 problem they identified?

The overwhelming feedback was that as the company and the industry were moving quickly, managers didn’t spend enough time to listen and understand. When employees talk to management about a problem, frequently management would interrupt, and start offering solutions.

Think about yourself and your organization. Do you listen well? Do you understand a problem before you offer a solution?

Listen, understand, think, and then offer solutions.
