"No company will ever get rid of their number-one cheerleader. Open enthusiasm and support is contagious and has positive effects on the entire workplace. Because of this, companies will consider their cheerleaders highly desirable. A company cheerleader is like a free PR department, always singing a company’s praises and inspring others to see the good around them. Cheerleaders have job security, they look like successful leaders, and they get promotee faster more oten than any other personality type" . – Page 123, Corporate Confidential: 50 Secrets Your Company Doesn’t Want You to Know—and What to Do About Them by Cynthia Shapiro .
My colleague and I recently created a short video — we both worked in product management. We recognized that a lot of folks in the company didn’t understand what product management was about. So, we interviewed people from different departments, and put together a short video. To make it funny and engaging, we found a clip of "office space" and used it as the beginning of our video.
It was a hit. It was hilarious. People paid attention. But, it was also educational, which helped us deliver our message.
It’s really easy to put together a video nowadays. I didn’t even have a video camera. So, I "filmed" all of my interviews using my Canon Powershot SD990IS 14.7MP Digital Camera. My colleague bought a cheap Flip Video Camcorder . It costs $129, and it holds 60-minutes of video! We used free software to edit the video clips. It’s actually quite fun to work on such a project.
Now, I recommend everyone to think about what you can do to help improve the morale in your company — given the layoffs and recession, the mood is pretty somber nowadays in most companies. It’s up to you to become a cheerleader. Go out to make an interesting video about office life at your work place. Give people an opportunity to laugh, to take it easy, and understand each other better.
Your employer will love it. Your colleague will appreciate it. And you’ll be proud of it.
It’s a win-win-win situation. And don’t forget to send me a link to your "office space" video. 🙂
