Does it worth the fight?

September 12th, 2008 · No Comments

"I didn’t know that a job could be so much more interesting and less stressful!" this is a comment from a former colleague. After college, she went to work for one of the largest Internet companies. It was political, stressful, and cut-throat. But, she persevered and stayed with the same company for more than 5 years. She finally quitted early this year and joined a smaller company.

The work was so much more interesting, fun and engaging for her now.

We are all taught not to quit. Sometime we keep fighting in a bad environment even we know it’s not good for us. Does it worth the fight? If you feel that you’re losing your heart and your soul, it is time to look around.

But, how do you know if you should stay and continue to fight? Or should you get out of your current environment? This is a personal decision that depends on individual situation. The rules of thumb I have been using are

  • has the current environment started to affect your mental and physical health for a prolonged period of time (e.g. longer than 3 months)?
  • each time after you talk to your boss, do you feel discouraged and frustrated?
  • Have you done everything within your control to change the situation? — this one is very important. You need to be honest — instead of blaming any external circumstances/people, make a checklist of things you can do to improve the situation and do them.

If your answer is "yes" to all of these questions, get out of there now!
