Which company offers the best severance package to laid-off employees?

Since I launched Layoff Satisfaction Survey on January 23, 2009, the responses have been overwhelming. Most survey responses rated their employers’ severance package as unfair or OK.

But, one company really stands out as "excellent" in term of how it treats its employees with care, respect and generosity.

The winner is Google! Here is the details of compensation packages Google offered its employees at a small regional office (the local office was closed.)

  • 60 days notice: take any time you need for internal or external job search. The 60 days notice period was timed to ensure employees *got* their annual bonus!
  • Benefits to end of month following 60 days.
  • Severance: 8 weeks + 1 week per completed year of service + vacation accrued. 
  • Guaranteed position and good relocation to New York, Boston, Pittsburg or Mountain View
  • Relocation to other Google locations if you can find a job there.

In response to the question "what feedback do you have for your former employer"?, one survey responder said: "Keep up the good work, Google!"

Wow — when your laid-off workers have nothing bad to say about you, and are appreciative of what you’ve done for them, you’re a great employer!

Google has never promoted itself in the public about how it treats its laid-off employees. But, I’m impressed. Google is living up to its "Don’t be evil" corporate motto.
