Are there diamonds in your backyard?

March 20th, 2009 · No Comments

"In ancient Persia, a wealthy farmer leaves his home to seek even greater wealth, and spends his life in a fruitless search for a perhaps mythical diamond mine. Finally, as age and years of frustration take their toll, he throws himself into the sea and dies, an unhappy pauper far from home. Meanwhile, back at his estate, the new owner, surveying his vast acreage, sees something in a stream, something bright, glistening in the sunlight. It is a large diamond, and turns out to rest atop the fabulous Golconda mine."

You probably have heard about the famous Acres of Diamonds story before. But, have you thought about what this means to you, your life, and your career?

Your "backyard" could be your home, your family, your current job, the organizations you’re affiliated with, your network of friends, etc.

The diamonds could be a caring relationships that you’ve taken for granted, a lucrative market opportunity that is knocking at your door, a customer problem that you could turn into an entrepreneurial venture,  a business contact that could help you grow your career in a big way, etc..

Are you wasting your time complaining, blaming external circumstances for your misery, day-dreaming to escape from your current reality?

Complaining, blaming, and escaping won’t help. Take 100% responsibilities for your present and future. When you feel lost, frustrated and defeated, look around you. Search within.  You might very well find a diamond or two in your own "backyard".

Your diamonds are not in far distant places. They’re in your own backyard if you dig for them.
