GeekMBA360 Fitness Goals for Q1, 2009 and call to action

January 16th, 2009 · No Comments

My employer recently modified our medical plans. The particular plan I enrolled offered an incentive: if I take a biometric test, and talk to a fitness counselor for five times during the year, I’ll save $20 per month for my insurance premium.

Some of my colleagues were concerned about privacy issues and decided not to take the biometric test — what is the insurance company going to do with the result of biometric test?

I decided to give the insurance company the benefit of doubt — the biometric test and fitness counseling are administered by a different company. According to the policy, the biometric test result would not be shared with insurance company.

The biometric test result turned out to be alarming — although my HDL and LDL are normal, my Triglycerides level is high. I’m not obese, but I could lose a few pounds to get my Triglycerides level down.

I talked to a few colleagues — almost everyone has some issues — weight, cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. Most of us are in our early-to-mid 30’s. I think we’re at a stage of our life that things are getting really busy, complicated, and stressful. Between demanding job and young kids, it’s quite a balance act.

I started working out regularly. This has nothing to do with new year resolution. 🙂 Instead, this is a response to the test result.

To make sure I stay disciplined, I decide to go pubic with my goals — I’m posting my goals here today. Every Friday, I’ll provide a "status report".

GeekMBA360 Fitness Goals for Q1, 2009

  1. Exercise for at least 3 times a week, 1 hour each time.
  2. Lose 10 pounds by 3/31/2009
  3. Stop adding sugar and creams when drinking coffee — I consulted with a dietitian. Apparently, my frequent intake of sugar and Half & Half is a significant contributor to my high cholesterol level. Do you like to use Half & Half or other type of creamers? They’re extremely unhealthy.

These are three simple goals. Probably look modest to some folks. But, I believe in making incremental improvements as oppose to "shoot for the moon". 🙂
