How to prepare for Amazon.com Second Life Job Fair

July 11th, 2009 · Comments

Amazon.com is doing something very interesting in the hiring front – it’s holding its first-ever virtual job fair in Second Life.

According to the announcement from Amazon Web Service blog, job applicants will have access to amazon hiring managers and recruiters  around the world. Also, they’ll be conducting first-round interviews virtually.

Amazon has many job openings, software developer, program manager, architect, etc.

The virtual job fair will be from 6AM – Midnight PST), Tuesday, July 14.

I think it’s very innovative for amazon to use Second Life as a recruiting platform. For job candidate, I do have a few suggestions for you to prepare for probably your first-ever job fair/interview in the virtual world.

  1. Make sure you don’t run into any technical difficulties. If you have an unstable broadband connection, find a place with reliable connections. You should make sure your computer’s speakers and microphone work properly with Second Life. You probably will need them for your first-round virtual interview.
  2. If you’ve never used Second Life before, open an account NOW and spend some time to familiarize yourself with the virtual world. Second Life is not difficult to use; it’s just a little bit different. Make sure you download the Second Life viewer. And learn how to move and fly in the virtual world.
  3. Remember the location of the job fair and get there on time! Click here to teleport yourself to amazon Developer 2 Island.
  4. If you’re an active Second Life user, I think you might want to consider open a new account just for the amazon job fair. In the real world, you tailor your resume to each employer. Similarly, in the virtual world, I suggest you to customize your virtual identity (i.e. your avatar in Second Life) for the amazon job fair and virtual interview.
  5. Think creatively about how you want to market yourself in the Second Life virtual world. How do you want to dress your avatar? What do you want to include in your profile? How can you stand out of the virtual crowed? Just like attending a real world job fair, you want to make an impression and differentiate yourself from the crowed.
  6. Spend a few hours to read my How To Get A Job At Amazon.com: A Definitive Guide, and practice the sample interview questions.

Have tons of fun and good luck! :-)
