I heard today that Microsoft had another round of layoff.
I’m not surprised.
I live in Seattle and I’m surrounded by people who work in Microsoft.
In the past 6 years, I knew only two people who told me they love working for Microsoft. I thought they’re either stupid or crazy.
I do have some very intelligent [...]

Prediction: The display advertising network bubble is about to burst
June 28th, 2010 · Comments
In the past few weeks, I learned directly and indirectly that several highly successful ad sales guys quitted their display ad sales jobs and switched to different niches of online advertising.
These are sales guys who accounted for 20-40% of their employers’ annual revenue. They were not laid off. In fact, most of them just got [...]

Will you still buy Toyota?
January 30th, 2010 · Comments
I’ve been a loyal customer and a fan of Toyota for a long time.
I’m not a car enthusiast. When I buy a car, all I need is a safe and reliable vehicle that can move me from point A to point B.
I’m not the most mechanical inclined person. I don’t like to do [...]

Google is desperate in China
January 14th, 2010 · Comments
I guess I’m in the mood to stir some controversies. This morning, I read What Google is up against in its China showdown on Seattle’s TechFlash blog, written by a Chinese American and so-called long-time China watcher. I disagreed with many of the points on the article. So, I left a long comment [...]

Mochi Media is an advertising network and payment platform for Flash Games. It has been acquired by Shanghai-based Shanda Games for $80 million ($60 million in cash and $20 million in equity).

As [...]

Continue or drop sponsorship with Tiger Wood?
December 14th, 2009 · Comments
It’s interesting to watch how large corporate advertisers react to the Tiger Wood saga.
Nike chairman Phil Knight stands by Tiger Wood: "When his career is over, you’ll look back on these indiscretions as a minor blip, but the media is making a big deal out of it right now."
On the other hand, consulting firm Accenture [...]

Is Amazon Fresh the future of grocery shopping and more?
September 23rd, 2009 · Comments
“Not Webvan or Homegrocer.com all over again. Grocery delivery is extremely low margin. It’s not going to work.” That’s my initial reaction when I first heard about Amazon Fresh, amazon.com’s grocery delivery service.
But, Amazon Fresh has really impressed me. Amazon Fresh started to deliver grocery in limited number of zip codes in the Seattle [...]

For at least one search term, Bing works much better than Google
June 11th, 2009 · Comments
Although I’ve been critical of Microsoft in the past, I have to say that I’m somewhat impressed by Bing.
I’m a fan of the PBS “Great American Scenic Railroads ” series. I have been to the official web site (www.gsrj.com) before, but I forgot to bookmark it.
Last night, I searched “Great American Scenic Railroads” on [...]

University of Phoenix and for-profit education
May 25th, 2009 · Comments
I just finished reading the fascinating REBEL WITH A CAUSE by John Sperling. In case you never heard about John Sperling, he founded University of Phoenix and grew it into a multi-billion dollars, publically traded company.
A few interesting things I learned about John Sperling and his founding of University of Phoenix from the book:
he [...]

The master strikes again — Quick thoughts on Oracle’s Acquisition of Sun Microsystems
April 20th, 2009 · Comments
Oracle announced this morning that it is buying Sun Microsystems in a deal valued approximately $7.4 billion.
I’d like to offer a few quick thoughts:
This is a brilliant strategic move by Larry Ellison, a master of acquiring enterprise technology companies.
Oracle’s bread-and-butter is database. Its single biggest threat is the open source MySql database. With [...]
