March 31st, 2009 · Comments

I once played speed chess with a friend in college. My friend was a much better player. He played speed chess with his dorm mates almost every day. I rarely played and I was not a good player at all. Basically, I had no chance to beat him.
But, one thing [...]

Flow, career satisfaction and happiness

March 30th, 2009 · Comments

In the past few years, I have consulted many friends about their career problems. Here are some common complaints and aspirations:

Life sucks.

I feel I’m stuck at my current job.
I cannot wait to get out of my current [...]

From ad-free blogger to #1 selling author on Amazon.com

March 25th, 2009 · Comments

I had been a reader of Ramit Sethi’s I Will Teach You To Be Rich blog since its inception. At that time, Ramit just graduated from Stanford University. Honestly, I thought Ramit was just another one of those arrogant young graduates of top universities — how could a young college graduate with little real-world experience [...]

How to deal with bullies at work

March 24th, 2009 · Comments

Sooner or later, you’ll encounter a bully in your workplace.
When I was a young professional fresh out of college, I was shy, passive, and naive. I was an easy target for bullies at workplace.  I remember when I first started working as an entry-level product manager, a bully took a major project I just completed, [...]

Which company offers the best severance package to laid-off employees?

March 21st, 2009 · Comments

Amazon.com Widgets
Since I launched Layoff Satisfaction Survey on January 23, 2009, the responses have been overwhelming. Most survey responses rated their employers’ severance package as unfair or OK.
But, one company really stands out as "excellent" in term of how it treats its employees with care, respect and generosity.
The winner is Google! Here [...]

Are there diamonds in your backyard?

March 20th, 2009 · Comments

"In ancient Persia, a wealthy farmer leaves his home to seek even greater wealth, and spends his life in a fruitless search for a perhaps mythical diamond mine. Finally, as age and years of frustration take their toll, he throws himself into the sea and dies, an unhappy pauper far from home. Meanwhile, back [...]

A great microfinance site that addresses China’s Urban-Rural Divide

March 19th, 2009 · Comments

I just discovered a new microfinance site – wokai — it really gets me excited.
It has a single-country focus – address China’s Urban-Rural Divide.
It’s founded by two Americans who have studied and lived in China. I appreciate their insight, compassion, and entrepreneurial drive to make things happen.
I’m impressed by their business development strategy. [...]
